This metropolis is often called the cultural capital of India for its deep-rooted traditions and long heritage. Chennai is a city younger than its image. More than any other city in India, it is a true reflection of this country’s diversity. In a time span of just over 350 years, Chennai has blossomed into a charming city that has a large heart and is very welcoming. It is city that encourages all forms of development, both modern technology and the traditional arts and crafts, and it embraces a series of paradoxes.
Morning pick up from hotel/airport & enjoy guided city tour including:
Saint Thomas Cathedral
Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. The British then rebuilt it in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.
National Art Gallery
Tenth century paintings, religious statues and relics occupy one building while the other contains mostly modern works. Built in the year 1907, National Arts Gallery is a red sandstone building, influenced by an archetypal Indo-Saracenic structure. Henry Irwin was designed it and T. Namberumal Chetty was the architect of this superb building. Often described as Victoria Memorial Hall, this museum occupies an important place in Mughal history. The key factors of this place are its motifs, structure and exclusive gallery collections, belonging to the 11th and 12th century. Each article or object on its display is fantastic. Typical handicrafts, beautiful sculptures, metal ware and elegant paintings are credited for the largest tourist attention.
The Government Museum
Founded in 1857, it is a multi-purpose museum that comprises of 46 galleries. The galleries are classified as an Archaeology Section, Bronze Gallery, Botany Section, Zoology Section, Geology Section, Art gallery, Numismatics Section etc. The excellent Madras artist H. Irvin was designed the museum. The largest space of this place has separated into a number of sections; an impressive hall, amazing reading room and conspicuous Teak wood shelf. The history of this museum belongs to the Colonial rule.
Note: Closed on Fridays.
St. Mary's Church
Considered to be the oldest Anglican Church in the East, built by the British in India. It is located in the Fort and proposed by William Dixon, a mastermind artist of British. There are broad walls, castellated ramparts and a deep well inside its area. On 28 October 1680, this church was declared as spiritual centre.
Zoological Park
Established in 1855, the zoological park is affirmed to the largest one in South East Asia. Sited at an outer part of Chennai on a large open moated island, this zoological park offers you an amusing climate to enjoy. More than 170 species of animals, birds and reptiles call this park a home. Tourists can witness endangered animals with Lion safari vehicles, battery operated vehicles and most interestingly elephant rides.
Marina Beach
This expansive beach is Chennai's most famous tourist attraction, though the undercurrent is too strong for all but the strongest swimmers. Look out for the "Kannagi" statue on Marina Beach, which tells the story of the legendary character from a South Indian epic.
